Leadership

MGMT 325 - Contemporary Organizations & Management

In this course, the fundamentals of the managerial process (planning, organizing, leading, and controlling) were considered in the context of 21st-century organizations. The topics were almost evenly split between macro and micro perspectives.

This course gave me insight into what makes an organization run properly and how management should handle certain issues. It helped me evaluate the company that I work for and see why the organizational structure is or is not working. Also, it helped me think about my place in my company and consider why we have certain company policies in place.

The main takeaway is being able to distinguish a leader from a manager. Managers are in charge, while leaders direct change and motivate others. Leaders are the life force of an organization.

Examples of coursework

Having to write about topics helps to ensure that you have retained the information, as well as properly articulating all of that knowledge. Most of the topics covered in this course were related to Human Resources, Business Strategies, and Management. The writing exercises allowed me to better understand the material, by putting it in my own words.

skills employers are seeking

Create and/or edit written reports:

This course was focused on students showcasing their understanding of 21st-century organizations through case studies and papers. Most of the assignments were centered around writing business papers to explain our point-of-view on various companies.

Plan, organize, and prioritize work:

Being that this was an online course and we were assigned papers, I had to stay very organized and manage my time wisely. There was no room for procrastination as assignments needed to be written accurately and proofed before submission.

relation to my future goals

Regarding my future goals, this Leadership course has allowed me to demonstrate written communication skills and the ability to interrelate with others. I learned how I could effectively lead change, motivate others, and confidently articulate business matters. These are all things that will help me, if and when I decide to pursue an MBA. Plus, I can take these skills and apply them to any role that I get after graduation.

ADDTITIONAL LEADERSHIP

LEADERSHIP LECTURE SERIES (LLS)

ODU's Monarchs LEAD Program guides and develops students on their leadership journey at Old Dominion University. Students gain leadership competencies from their first year until graduation. The program consists of three developmental phases: Emerging Leaders, Developing Leaders, and Monarch Leaders. The Monarchs LEAD Program utilizes the social change model of leadership and examines the individual, the group, and the community. One aspect of this program is the Leadership Lecture Series (LLS).

Monarch LEAD – Comprehensive Leadership Program: Leadership Lecture Series (LLS) offers leadership-focused lectures throughout each semester to give students the opportunity to build on current leadership skills.

Participating in these lectures improved my ability to apply the content from my courses to real-life situations.
